I have a confession… Flying is not my favourite thing. It actually kind of terrifies me. Which is unfortunate because Zach and I have friends and family spread out all over the place so we do it a fair amount. To visit my family on the East Coast it’s two flights and about 9 hours of traveling and Zach has family in the UK, Arizona, and B.C. We’re always planning some sort of trip to see someone it seems. I’ve tried different strategies to conquer this fear, some that have worked and others not so much… And I’m slowly building an arsenal of practices that makes the process more enjoyable.
One thing I find helps put me in a better state of mind is paying attention to what I’m wearing and doing my hair/make-up (as silly as that sounds). I think it’s because it gives me something fun to focus on, and it’s true (for me anyway) that putting a bit of effort into your appearance can really do wonders for your mood.
I also make sure I am really well hydrated the few days before I fly, and that I eat light, hydrating foods the day of because I can get pretty queasy during the flight. Most importantly, I HAVE to have a glass of sparkling wine (unless it is an early flight.. then I have a mimosa). Nothing like a little liquid courage… lol.
I have a life rule against eating airport food whenever I can avoid it because it’s often expensive, unhealthy and not very good. I like to bring my own snacks and food and often pack things like homemade trail mix, homemade naturally sweetened granola bars, fruit, cheese and gourmet sandwiches to keep me going. I find packing my own food is especially important when traveling with a toddler because they LOVE to snack, and buying snack after snack at an airport could definitely add up.
When I traveled to the East Coast, I had a red eye flight so I wanted to keep things comfy while still looking put together. I just picked up these navy kicks from J.Crew so I kind of styled things around them. I went with a pair of grey patterned leggings (also really like these, these, these), a grey tank and a grey cardigan and packed up my large navy tote (they don’t have it in blue anymore, but other colours are available) with snacks, magazines and toys for Emmylou.
Our next flight will be to Mexico in the fall because we’re heading to a wedding down there, and I’m allready counting down the days (despite the flying part…).
