So Zach always says he is a ‘traditionalist’ when it comes to grilled cheese and completely overreacts when I try something outside-the-box (like adding a slice of tomato….). We eat grilled cheese probably more often than we should because it’s delicious and so easy, but it can get a bit old if your sticking to the same old cheddar, bread, butter format. 

But, I’m happy to say that I successfully managed to break us out of our grilled cheese rut with this baby. I ate it, Emmylou ate it, Zach ate it, I ate more of it… It was really freaking good. I debated whether to use pear or green apple, and actually bought both because I couldn’t make up my mind, but ended up going with the pear in the end – mostly because it was perfectly ripe and I couldn’t resist. But I think the green apple would be an excellent choice as well so if you don’t have any perfectly ripe pear available to you, you’re still in business.

Also a quick parenting story to go with this delicious grilled cheese… As I type this my husband is loosing his mind because one of our couch cushions smells really bad and he thinks Emmylou might have peed on it and we didn’t notice… Ah the joys of raising a toddler. He actually said ‘Do we just buy new couches?’ I don’t know how bad it smells because I refuse to get anywhere near it, but he’s about to put it in the wash so hopefully that takes care of the situation.

Instructions

  1. Slice bread and butter one side. Slice Gruyère and pear, place on un-buttered side of bread, sprinkle a few pieces of arugula, top with another slice of bread/ Grill over medium heat until bread is browned and cheese melted.
